Google Firsts, a small footprint or giant lake.

Nexus One

SideWiki ConversationGoogle has recently launched its new offering, the Nexus One into the mobile telephone market. This phone is already being heralded as the technology that could topple iphone. It runs on Google’s Android operating system, which is much more open to developers than Apple’s app store. With a less proprietary platform, sleek looks, and versatility, the Nexus One will connect more people to the social web. Software applications for the phone will make connecting with social media networks incredibly fast and simple.

Offering a tangible piece of technology a person can hold in their hand is a first for the internet giant. In fact, there are many Google firsts involved with the Nexus One. For example, Google’s main search page has almost always been completely bare and free of advertizing since its inception; however the Nexus One currently appears as a small, but prominently centered advertisement beneath the Google search bar. Yes, Google has placed advertisements on their main page before, ala their Chrome browser, but this time the product has been so prominently featured on the main page.

This strategy seems to be Google’s way of utilizing the massive community they have built behind their search engine to sell a product. Without community, Google would not be able to effectively use their search engine’s homepage to advertise for the Nexus One. Google knows the power of community, and has proven itself time and time again to be astute in that observation. Not everyone can have a community the size of Google’s, but beginning the building process is the only way anyone can hope to. Maybe today is the day for you. There’s only one way to find out.
